Amelia Fitzjohn 7th December 2019

I remember our dear sweet Aunty Phyllis with much fondness. As I reflect on how few times I actually saw her during my 7 decades, I am amazed at how strong a bond we developed and how much I liked her and grew to dearly love her. This is certainly a reflection of what an incredible personality she was. Although Aunty Phyllis probably knew me as a child, my first recollection of her was in 1972 when I visited my parents in Lagos, where they worked for 6 years. My mother Alice Fitzjohn and Aunty Phyllis were cousins, and I soon learned that they really cared for each other very much. I saw a lot of Aunty Phyllis that Christmas and on my next visit to Nigeria in the summer of 1973; I also got to know her children: Nike, Bola, Folashade, and Tokunmbo, who were close to my younger siblings Katie and late Jonathan (my mother would say that Folashade reminded her of her own mother - that's how close the family line is!). Jennifer, Aunty's eldest daughter, I knew already from Freetown. I next recall Aunty visiting me at my Silver Spring home when she was on vacation in the US in 2005. I feel so fortunate that our paths crossed again in 2017 at Nike’s home; I was working in Abuja and visited Lagos on the weekend Aunty returned home from a UK vacation. Aunty Phyllis was warm, caring, full of joy, and always welcoming. Her life was full of love, and I enjoyed hearing her stories. I got to understand why my mother had so much affection for her. Heartfelt sympathy to our Stronge and Bakare cousins. The Fitzjohn children will all miss your beautiful caring Mother, but know that she is at peace in the loving arms of our Lord. Rest in Peace dearest Aunty Phyllis! Amelia Fitzjohn Broderick
